Packing for a 2-week off-the-grid adventure can seem daunting. Can you really keep food cold that entire time? Yes. You. Can! With an exceptional cooler and the right packing technique, you can keep your food cold and stored for 2-weeks in the wilderness.
For starters, our go-to cooler is the Yeti Tundra 65. With 3 inches of Permafrost insulation, these fat walls are the key to keeping things cold! It is also bear resistant when locked, which is even more awesome! One less thing to worry about. Another feature we like about this cooler is the T-Rex Lid Latches constructed of heavy-duty rubber and made with patented technology. Yeti knows how to engineer a DURABLE product.
How to pack it:
- Line the bottom of your cooler with blocks of ice. Fill in all of the cracks or voids with chips or small cubes of ice.
- Cover ice with a closed cell foam pad. It works as a barrier so your food doesn’t freeze. We used a cheap foam camping mat from Amazon.
- Pack food and drinks. A cooler is just like your refrigerator at home. Everything has a meticulous spot. All frozen items that you would find in your freezer are placed under the closed cell foam pad on top of the ice. Food that you would normally keep in your refrigerator is placed on top of the foam pad.
- Cover food with second piece of insulated foam pad. This works as a seal to help keep your food taste fresher and last longer. Close cooler.
- Create a cooler map so you always remember where everything is stored. Only open cooler when absolutely necessary. The longer you’re cooler is open the warm outside air will melt your ice fast.
If you pack your cooler correctly you’ll even have enough ice left over to ice your sore legs from all of the hiking, running, riding, wild adventuring you’ve been up to!
